The Lounge, The Careers & The Cynic Upstairs: Men’s Edition

Yet again, I sit back in the leather-bound embrace of the airport lounge, nursing a cup of coffee that costs more than my dignity. The world around me hums with the sound of people pretending they have somewhere very important to be … eerily similar to how I put up the same act:)

Two men settle into the seats beside me. Polished shoes, tailored suits, and a confidence level that suggests they close million-dollar deals before breakfast. Their laptop bags are carefully placed—not too far to seem casual, not too close to seem desperate.

The Cynic Upstairs smirks. “This will be a masterclass in professional chest-thumping.”

Phase 1: The Alpha Handshake

Man 1 (let’s call him Rajat): “Bro! Long time! What’s it been, three years?”

Man 2 (Vikram): “At least, man! Last time was that fintech summit in Mumbai, right?”

They shake hands—firm, prolonged, with just the right amount of pressure to subtly assert dominance.

The Cynic Upstairs leans in. “Nothing in life matters more than proving your grip strength.”

Phase 2: The Title Flex

Rajat: “So, where are you at these days?”

Vikram: “Oh, I moved to AlphaCorp. Heading Strategy & Growth now.”

Rajat (nods, but subtly tenses): “Nice, nice. I’m still at NexGen, but running the whole Southeast Asia vertical now.”

Translation: You may have switched, but I have expanded.

The Cynic Upstairs chuckles. “Ah, the art of never letting another man believe he’s winning.”

Phase 3: The Travel Status Battle

Vikram: “Man, I’ve been living on flights. Last week was Singapore, then straight to Tokyo. I haven’t slept in my own bed for two weeks.”

Rajat (laughs): “Tell me about it! I was in London for a board meeting, then straight to Dubai for a conference. My jet lag has jet lag.”

They clink their overpriced espresso shots, bonding over the universal truth that exhaustion = status.

The Cynic Upstairs whispers, “The modern equivalent of knights comparing battle scars.”

Phase 4: The Silent Luxury Check

Vikram casually stretches, revealing a Rolex peeking from under his cuff.

Rajat notices, but doesn’t flinch. Instead, he places his car keys on the table—Porsche emblem facing up.

The Cynic Upstairs gasps dramatically. “Weapons. Have. Been. Drawn.”

Phase 5: The “I Could, But I Choose Not To” Move

Rajat: “Thinking of making a move to New York next year. The firm’s been pushing, but you know, I love the flexibility here.”

Vikram: “I hear you. I just turned down a Dubai opportunity. Great money, but I don’t want to burn out at this stage, you know?”

Both men exude an air of effortless decision-making, as if global offers arrive like Amazon deliveries.

The Cynic Upstairs whispers, “Ah, the unspoken contest of ‘Who is rejecting the bigger opportunity?’”

Phase 6: The Mutual Exit Strategy

Vikram (glances at his watch): “My flight’s boarding in ten.”

Rajat: “Same here. Bro, let’s not wait three years for the next catch-up.”

Vikram: “For sure, man. Let’s do something in Dubai soon. I’ll be there in March.”

Rajat: “March? I might be in Zurich. But let’s sync.”

They shake hands again—harder, firmer, like two gladiators acknowledging a worthy opponent.

As they walk away, The Cynic Upstairs laughs. “Two men, two careers, one invisible scoreboard.”

I sip my now-cold coffee, watching them disappear into the terminal. Two alphas, locked in eternal combat, where the only real loser… is the coffee they never got to finish.
