Room Service Chronicles & The Cynic Upstairs: A Five-Star Comedy Special

I sit in my plush five-star hotel room, admiring the soft lighting, absurdly overpriced minibar, and the remote control wrapped in plastic as if it’s a holy artifact.

It’s midnight, and I decide to test the legendary “24×7 room service”—a concept that promises luxury but often delivers a well-packaged episode of confusion.

The Cynic Upstairs smirks. “This will be fun.”

Episode 1: The Call That Takes a Lifetime

I dial Room Service.

“Hello, sir, welcome to [Hotel Name]’s fine dining room service. How may I assist you?”

“Hi, I’d like to order a club sandwich.”

“Certainly, sir. Would you like the vegetarian or non-vegetarian?”

“Non-vegetarian.”

“Excellent choice, sir. Would you like white bread or multigrain?”

“White.”

“Sir, we are out of white bread.”

The Cynic Upstairs raises an eyebrow. “A five-star hotel that ran out of white bread? This is going to be a wild ride.”

I sigh. “Fine, multigrain.”

“Perfect, sir. Would you like fries or salad on the side?”

“Fries.”

“Sir, we are out of fries.”

The Cynic Upstairs chuckles. “What next? No sandwich?”

I take a deep breath. “Fine. Just bring the sandwich.”

“Certainly, sir. It will be delivered in 30 minutes.”

I hang up, already feeling like I’ve done a corporate negotiation.

Episode 2: The Mysterious Arrival

45 minutes later, I hear a knock at the door.

I open it to find a man who looks like he was teleported straight from a Michelin-starred restaurant, holding a silver tray with the intensity of a brain surgeon.

“Your sandwich, sir.”

I nod, about to grab the tray, when he steps back dramatically.

“Sir, I will place it on the table for you.”

I watch as he slowly walks inside, carefully places the tray, adjusts the cutlery, refolds the napkin, and then stands in silence.

The Cynic Upstairs smirks. “Ah yes, the great Five-Star Ritual—where serving food must look like an ancient royal ceremony.”

Finally, he asks, “Would you like me to uncover it, sir?”

I hesitate. “Uhh… sure?”

With dramatic flair, he lifts the silver lid as if revealing a lost treasure.

I stare.

The sandwich is cut into ridiculously tiny triangles.

The Cynic Upstairs snickers. “Looks like they used a microscope to portion this.”

“Sir, enjoy your meal.”

He bows slightly, walks to the door, turns around one last time as if to say goodbye to a dying friend, and leaves.

Episode 3: The Mysterious Bill

As I take my first bite, my phone buzzes.

“Sir, this is Room Service. Kindly confirm if you are satisfied with your order.”

I chew. Should I say no? Will they send another guy to perform the sandwich unveiling again?

“Yeah, it’s fine.”

“Thank you, sir. We will now charge it to your room.”

Charge? How much?

I check the menu. ₹1200 for a sandwich. ₹300 for taxes.”

The Cynic Upstairs lets out a whistle. “Ah yes, the Five-Star Economy—where one sandwich costs more than a monthly grocery bill.”

Episode 4: The Midnight Follow-Up

At 11 PM, I hear another knock at the door.

I open it, half-asleep, to find the same room service guy, looking deeply concerned.

“Sir, I am deeply sorry to disturb you, but… would you like dessert? In case the sandwich was not up to your taste?”

The Cynic Upstairs bursts out laughing. “I respect the hustle, but wow.”

I close the door. Five-star service is a full-time relationship.

And as I fall asleep, dreaming of sandwiches and hidden charges, I realize one thing:

In a five-star hotel, room service isn’t just a meal. It’s a performance.
