The Pub Entrance & The Cynic Upstairs

It’s Saturday night, and I find myself standing outside one of the most popular, most exclusive, and most frustratingly crowded nightclubs in town.

The air is thick with anticipation, impatience, and the faint scent of expensive perfume mixed with questionable decision-making.

The Cynic Upstairs leans in. “Welcome to the human bottleneck of desire and rejection.”

Phase 1: The Gatekeepers of the Night

At the front stands the Bouncer—a massive wall of muscle, attitude, and selective hospitality.

One nod from him = instant access to the kingdom of overpriced cocktails.
One shake of his head = social death in front of your peers.

The Cynic Upstairs smirks, “This man holds more power over the weekend plans of millennials than their own bank balances.”

Phase 2: The ‘Guest List’ Illusion

A group of men approaches with faux confidence.

“Bro, we’re on the list.”

The bouncer barely looks at them. “Name?”

“Rahul +3.”

The bouncer checks. “No Rahul here.”

Rahul insists. “Bro, I spoke to Ankit.”

The bouncer sighs, “Which Ankit?”

Rahul stammers. There is no Ankit.

The Cynic Upstairs laughs, “Ah, the great gamble of name-dropping. Played by many, won by none.”

Phase 3: The ‘Dude-to-Girl Ratio’ Tragedy

A group of five guys approaches, brimming with misguided optimism.

“Bro, entry?”

The bouncer barely glances at them. “Stag?”

“Yeah, but we’ll buy a table.”

The bouncer’s face remains unmoved. “Not tonight.”

The group looks around desperately for female friends.

Meanwhile, a group of three women walks in effortlessly. No questions asked.

One of the guys sighs, “Bro, this is so unfair.”

The Cynic Upstairs shrugs, “Nature has always been about balance. Unfortunately, here, it’s about ratios.”

Phase 4: The VIP Show-Off

A luxury car pulls up. The doors open in slow motion, releasing men who reek of money and arrogance.

They breeze past the queue, with a nod to the bouncer.

“Sir, welcome.”

A guy from the rejected stag group whispers, “Bro, I think that’s the builder’s son.”

The Cynic Upstairs rolls his eyes, “The bouncer doesn’t check ID. He checks net worth.”

Phase 5: The Desperate Negotiators

“Bro, let me in, I’ll pay anything.”

“Bro, just 5 minutes, I swear we won’t cause trouble.”

“I know the owner, let me call him.”

The Cynic Upstairs leans back. “A nightclub entrance is the only place where grown men beg more than job applicants.”

Phase 6: The Victory Walk

I finally reach the front.

The bouncer gives me a look. Not quite approval. Not quite rejection.

I give him a stoic look, maintaining a neutral expression. And my hair does the trick – yet again.

“Go ahead, sir.”

As I walk past the mass of rejected souls, I hear a guy mutter, “Bro, how did HE get in?”

The Cynic Upstairs smirks. “Some mysteries are best left unsolved.”

And just like that, the night begins.
