Me, My Friends, and Why Our Mumbai Apartment Was Nothing Like ‘F.R.I.E.N.D.S’

Everyone who has ever watched F.R.I.E.N.D.S has, at some point, thought—

“Wow, I want a friend group like that.”

A group of witty, supportive, always-there-for-you besties, hanging out in an impossibly large apartment, drinking endless coffee, and experiencing life’s ups and downs together.

Then, reality hits.

I, too, had my F.R.I.E.N.D.S moment when I lived in Mumbai, sharing a spacious 1,500 square feet apartment with four other people, surviving on street food, late-night debates, and questionable life decisions.

This is my hilarious comparison between the sitcom fantasy and my actual chaotic early-career roommate life.

1. The Apartment—Central Perk vs. Central Mess

On F.R.I.E.N.D.S, Monica’s apartment is spacious, organized, and always open for random gatherings.

Our Mumbai Apartment?

  • 1,500 sq. ft. of glorious space.
  • Two bathrooms (a luxury).
  • A common area where philosophical debates and stupid fights coexisted.
  • A kitchen that was used mainly for storing Maggi and beer.

Me: “Guys, let’s keep this place clean like Monica’s apartment!”
Reality: Three days later, we were living in a controlled disaster zone.

The Cynic Upstairs: “Monica would have a nervous breakdown in here.”

2. The Chandler of Our Group (A.k.a. The Sarcasm Machine)

On F.R.I.E.N.D.S, Chandler is the sarcastic king who makes terrible jokes but is secretly a softie.

In our group, this role was filled by Amit.

Me: “We should cook dinner tonight!”
Amit: “Sure, and while we’re at it, let’s also launch a startup, solve world hunger, and meet Leonardo DiCaprio.”

Amit’s primary contribution to the group: Making fun of us while still being the guy who fixed the WiFi.

The Cynic Upstairs: “A true national treasure.”

3. The Joey of Our Group (A.k.a. The Forever Broke One)

Joey in F.R.I.E.N.D.S is the jobless actor who somehow always has food.

Our version? Rohit.

  • Never had money but always had food.
  • Mysteriously knew people who gave him free meals.
  • Always ‘forgetting’ to pay rent on time.

Us: “Rohit, do you even HAVE a job?”
Rohit: “Bro, life is about experiences, not paychecks.”

The Cynic Upstairs: “Translation: We are never getting back the money we lent him.”

4. The Ross of Our Group (A.k.a. The Overly Dramatic One)

Ross is the nerdy, over-explaining, emotional wreck of the group.

Our Ross? Sandeep.

Example of a normal discussion:

Me: “Should we order biryani or pizza?”
Sandeep: “Did you know that biryani originated from Persia, but pizza has Roman influences? Also, I read a study that—”

Me: “OH MY GOD, JUST PICK ONE.”

The Cynic Upstairs: “Why do we always have a friend like this?”

5. The Rachel of Our Group (A.k.a. The One Who Was Always ‘Figuring Life Out’)

Rachel starts off clueless about life and somehow always lands on her feet.

For us, this was Priya.

  • Tried five different career paths in one year.
  • Lost her phone at least once a week.
  • Had a love life more complicated than a Christopher Nolan movie.

Priya: “Guys, I think I’m going to quit my job and travel the world.”
Us: “You say this every month.”

Two weeks later—

Priya: “Guys, I have a new job! It’s amazing!”

The Cynic Upstairs: “Rachel Green in real life.”

6. The Phoebe of Our Group (A.k.a. The One Who Made No Sense but We Loved Anyway)

Phoebe Buffay is weird, unpredictable, and somehow always happy.

For us, this was Anjali.

Anjali’s Most Random Quotes:

  • “Did you know you can talk to plants and they understand?”
  • “I think I was a cat in my past life.”
  • “If I marry a rich man, does that count as financial planning?”

The Cynic Upstairs: “She’s either a genius or has lost her mind. There is no in-between.”

7. The Ultimate Reality Check

On F.R.I.E.N.D.S, the characters had endless free time, a fancy café to hang out in, and a perfectly furnished apartment.

Us in Mumbai?

  • No free time (because survival requires working ALL THE TIME).
  • Our ‘café’ was a roadside chai stall.
  • Our apartment had space, but our schedules were too chaotic to enjoy it.

Me: “Why doesn’t our life feel like a sitcom?”
The Cynic Upstairs: “Because real life has bills.“

8. The One Where We All Grew Up

As time passed, we started moving on:

  • Amit got married and became responsible.
  • Rohit finally got a job (and still owes us money).
  • Sandeep is still over-explaining history.
  • Priya is still ‘figuring life out.’
  • Anjali is somewhere, probably talking to plants.

But no matter where we went, those chaotic Mumbai apartment days still made the best stories.

Because at the end of the day, we were our own version of F.R.I.E.N.D.S—just with less coffee and more existential crises.

Final Thoughts

F.R.I.E.N.D.S made us believe in perfect friendships, endless free time, and spacious apartments.

Reality? Friendship is real. Everything else is a scam.

I, as always, miss those days. The Cynic Upstairs? He’s wondering if Rohit will EVER return the ₹500 he borrowed.

And my friends? Still a chaotic mess. Just like always.
